Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. The aunt she had was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay immediately fell in love with that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially aware and taught her how to use the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house that belonged to a member of jury. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
